QCA student Marisa Georgiou’s projection Twenty Minutes (2014) was a work that
had a profound effect on me. It was one of the most powerful and haunting video
works I have seen this year. It is also a work about grief and our ephemeral
existence. Her use of a veil corresponds with my interest in delicate opaque
materials. It compounded my interest in this idea of a barrier despite its fragility and gentleness. I found her artist statement very profound and concise particularly
the last two paragraphs:
“The figure enshrouded is a physical symbol
of the introversion that takes place indicating an act of isolation. In its
most simple/universal terms, a veil is a separator or an encloser, an honouring
of the space…. Transcribed into shadow and projection form, the work becomes an
exploration of corporeality: the shadow, usually an indicator of a physical
presence, can no longer be relied on. Conversely, the breath, which is usually
invisible, became visible”.
(Didactic panel Twenty Minutes Duration: 20:00 from the exhibition Jalan Jalan
Project Gallery, QCA September 2014).
